You’ve done your homework. You’re attracting some fans, followers and likes. You’re posting some great stuff and asking questions. The problem is, your following isn’t growing and no one’s talking except you. You’re not alone. It’s happened to just about everyone who has started a Facebook page.
So, how do you get your fans excited and talking amongst themselves and you?
Using Facebook Ads si one of the best and fastest ways to grow you business and Facebook base. Using Facebook Ads is relatively easy. You design your ad, choose a dollar amount per day that you are will to spend, and then choose how you want those dollars used. Do you want want to pay when people look at your ad (CPC), or do you want o pay only when people click though (CPM). In any case the caution here is to budget well.
Another way to stir interest is by holding events. Get people follwing and talking by offering a special event, gift or give-away contest. The ladies at Networking In High Heels have a link sharing day where all of their fans are able to post and share their links with others. This “link party” builds community not only by letting their fans share about their businesses, but by the sharing of links, fans follow fans, and so on…
Lynne Terry, the affiliate marketing guru, offered a chance to win her Kindle. The deal was you had to comment to win. She did this as a way to get comments on her blog, but you could you could use the same ida as a Facebook giveaway. The drawback is that some people may just come onboard to win and then unfollow you.
Building your following the organically takes the most time, but also reaps the most benefits because you target your following to those who are in your market.
Carol Deckert is a prime example of how to build a huge following organically. What I mean by this is that she spends time joining and participating in groups and taking an interest in what other people have to say. People have come to respect her as a networking expert. They have sought her out and liked her page because of this and because other professionals suggest that their fans follow her as well. She’s been using this method for 5 years and it has served her well.
Using Facebook Ads
Now, you’ve got people following you. . How do you keep them coming back?
Content and Activity
This may be the “chicken and egg” of the social media world. You’ve got to have great content to post and you have to be active on your page. You also need to read and comment on your fans’ pages.
When I say be active, do I mean every day? Yep. Buddy Media posted these statistics in April 2011:
- Businesses that posted outside of regular business hours had 20% higher engagement rates.
- The three peak times for Facebook engagement are 7 a.m. ET, 5p.m. ET and 11 p.m. ET. This is when your customers are most likely to interact.
- Days of the week are important as well. Thursday and Fridays have 18% more engagement than other days. Sundays are good days to post too.
WORD TO THE WISE
Don’t put all your updates in one basket. Know your customer. Do test research yourself and see what works for you.
What kind of content?
It’s not all about what you want them to know. It’s about what they want to know as well. Be the customer. What would you want to know about your business? What do you need to know? Remember you want them to go “Ah!” “Hmmmm.” “Wow! I’ve gotta share this!” So, look at what you’re posting and ask yourself if you’d want to read it? Be creative. Posting stories, videos and pictures are huge.
But for Pete’s sake, don’t get too personal. Unless you sell some kind of ointment, we really don’t care if your baby has diaper rash (We might, but we don’t want to read about it on your business page). Don’t roll your eyes! This has really happened!
To build a following and get people talking takes some time and finesse. By being creative, post interesting content on daily basis and commenting on your fans’ pages you’ll be on the right track to attracting targeted fans and converting sales.

From time to time in my corporate career as a business development director, I had to take those “strength and weakness” assessments. You know the kind I mean. Sometimes they’re called “personality profiles” or “management assessments”. We all know that the giver of the test just wants to know what you’re really good at. And what you’re not.
When it came time for me to head out of cubicle land and into my own consulting business, I wanted to find a measurement for my clients to find out about their strengths and weaknesses, but also I wanted them to be able to do something about their weaker points! What’s the use of handing someone a piece of paper showing their test results and not giving the person the tools to develop their weaknesses into strengths so they can get ahead?
Are you going to say, “Here you go. Here are your strengths, and here’s where you need to improve. Now skippety-lou on out of here and go fix yourself.”? Well, that’s what happens in the majority of the time. Maybe there’s a book suggestion or a self-help class to take, but on the whole if you’ve got weaknesses, (and who doesn’t?) you’re on your own.
No wonder so many people under-achieve, right?
I stumbled upon a website called Think TQ. Wow. I have to tell you I LOVE this site. Why? Think TQ has a FANTASTIC strengths and weakness assessment. The best I’ve ever seen. In addition though, Think TQ provides the tools you need to work out the kinks in your armor.
The TQ Test measures your effectiveness on 10 levels. You’ll find out where you stand in areas such as, attitude, goal setting, prioritizing, and organizing. TQ takes it a stop further to your effectiveness in some different areas as well. These include: mission, energy, synergy, planning, optimizing and acting.
Once you get done, you’ve got a great color – coded charting and explanation of where you are and how to get where you want to be.
If you sign up for Today’s TQ, you’ll get a jump on your day with a positive, motivating reading based on one of the color categories.
There are books, CD’s and DVD’s for sale for those who wish to purchase even more information and help materials. I have read good reviews on all of the materials.
I’m glad I took that test all those years ago.
The results surprised me and the tools I was given helped me to streamline what I needed to do to become a better person and business owner. I still read “Today’s TQ” and I go back and retake the test once every six months – a year or so. It’s amazing how things change!
You might be thinking, “Ugh! Another one of those quiz things! What a load of crap!” I would ask you to humor me and think again. Go to the site and take the quiz. I’ll tell you that my weakest link wasn’t what I thought it was…
Share what you found out about yourself on your quiz and how the Think TQ tools are helping you.
As ever, we wish you the best in your success both personally and professionally!
